Re-fashioning: Mixed-media appliqué

Three hours | $120

Learn how to creatively embellish and rework fabric using a mix of hands-on techniques, then bring it all together in a small, usable piece you'll actually use.

This workshop introduces you to a range of appliqué and embellishment techniques that you can apply to garments you already own, special second-hand finds, or fresh fabric. Whether you're adding new life to something damaged, dated, or a basic, we'll show you how to approach it with a creative eye.

What to Expect

You'll start with the base for a small zip pouch, using reclaimed textiles, and build it up using a mix of techniques, trying your hand at several before sewing your embellished fabric into a finished piece to take home.

This format allows you to:

  • Learn adaptable embellishment skills you can apply to your own garments and projects at home

  • Practice in a supported, creative environment

  • Leave with a finished piece, plus the confidence to keep experimenting

Some of the Techniques and Skills You Might Learn

  • Screen printing small shapes and motifs

  • Needle felting

  • Beading and sequin work

  • Appliqué shapes

  • Embroidery

  • Cornelli stitching

If you prefer to embellish something of your own instead of the pouch base - bring along an existing garment or textile item, especially one with a little damage or in need of some personality, and use that as your canvas instead.

You'll Have Access To

A curated supply of appliqué and embellishment materials - fabric, zip, screen print materials, needle felting tools, a selection of beads & sequins, embroidery threads, and more.

What to Bring

  • Just yourself and a healthy dose of curiosity

Who It's For

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in creative reuse, mending, or simply trying their hand at a mix of textile techniques. No need for extensive sewing experience - just a willingness to experiment and learn.

All welcome (ages 12-15 with an adult, sorry no under 12s).
